Happy Monday to you!  Let me first off say that I love Costco!  That was kind of random but I just needed to get that off my chest.  We were there yesterday and I was leaving I just said, the title of today’s post should be I LOVE COSTCO“.  It is such a great store and I had a great round of samples yesterday.

Slice It Up

Ever spend a lot of time making a gorgeous dessert and then when you go to cut it… it looks like poo.  It has happened to me and if it happened to you, your not alone.  The key to rectifying this problem is using the proper style knife for the job.  Below I will go ahead and try to explain a few tips so that your desserts slice as good as they taste.

Slice cakes, tarts and pies like a pro.

1. For cheesecake and squares, keep a glass of hot water and a clean dish towel handy.  Before cutting each slice, dip the knife into the water and wipe clean.  The hot knife will slide right through the cake.
2. For pound or sponge cakes, use a serrated knife and a sawing motion to cut through without squishing or tearing the cake.
3. Use un-waxed dental floss to slice through the cake (great for the gooey or sticky cakes)
4. Lining your baking dish or spring form pan with parchment paper before baking squares and cheesecakes will help you pick up each slice cleanly.

Well Surprise Surprise and Happy Friday!  I was thinking Wednesday night as I watched Team Canada wipe out Russia in Men’s hockey and now last night the Woman’s hockey Team capturing Gold that a fun post would be to chatter about TV snacks – specifically Olympic TV snacks.

For me TV snacks are what I think about the whole day.  Lately I have been devouring chips into as if I had just heard a break news story on CNN that come the end of February all potato chips will be ceased and no longer allowed to be sold.  Enough of me and the chips…. Here are some other tasty snacks I really enjoy while sitting in front of the Olympics.

1. Cashews - I love the crunch and I find these way to addictive.  I can quickly find myself at the bottom of the bag or tin before I even realize.  These are dangerous!



2. Licorice Babies – Anything black licorice I am all over like a plump kid on a rolo bar.  I cannot get enough of these.  And lately Ganong has not been letting me down.  The bags are super fresh and almost melt in your mouth like.  I also love the black Ju Jubes as well.



3. Chicken Wings ( I know not technically a snack but it is for me ) – One of my all time fav foods.  Chicken wings RULE!  Love Love Love them.



4. Ice Cream Sandwiches – Me and ice cream are not super close friends but sometimes we have little sessions where we feel inseparable.  I definitely go through phases with Ice cream.  Lately I just love these Ice cream sandwiches



5. Chocolate - Enough said!

I am still finding it hard to believe that I was one of the 5 chosen food bloggers to deliver my rendition of a “SIMPLE SUNDAY SUPPER”.  I went with a pretty traditional classic recipe that uses Campbell’s cream of mushroom soup as the cream sauce and chicken and broccoli as the substance over some delicious noodle.

Happy Monday! Did anyone watch the super bowl? What did you think of it? I thought it was a pretty good game as far as entertainment went. I didn’t really have a favorite team playing so I was somewhat non biased as to who I was hoping to win. The only thing I was really hoping for is the “FOOD“.

Let’s just say that Zesty In-law delivers yet again.  It seems like time after time zesty in law delivers amazing food and it really doesn’t even matter if the TV is on for me.  Lats night’s line up was no different.  You can sum this up as MAN FOOD night.  Boy was it good.  Around 11:00 pm when I left to come home I could barely waddle my way out to the car.

Menu

• Pulled Pork Sliders on homemade rolls
• Fresh baked beans
• Pork Side Ribs from the Grill
• Beef Ribs with Brandy, Molasses and Coffee ( Check out the size of these things )

I was so excited to see what was on the menu and I knew I would not be disappointed.  The flavors of the food was amazing.  You cannot beat the grill no matter if it is snowing out or not.  I was really impressed with the pulled pork…. delicious and I am pretty sure I could have had 10 little sandwiches.  I stopped at 3 just so I would not look like a total PIG.

Mid week Wednesday is here to stay!  I hope everyone is doing well.  You know in the past I have asked people about what their favorite herbs and spices are as well as I had posted about sweet vs salty.

Both were fun and created a lot of buzz so I thought I would go out on a limb and find out “What is your favorite seasoning?”.

According to Wikipedia, seasoning can be defined as…

Seasoning is the process of imparting or improving flavor of food.[1] Seasonings include herbs, spices, and all other condiments, which are themselves frequently referred to as “seasonings”. However, Larousse Gastronomique states that “to season and to flavor are not the same thing“, insisting that seasoning includes a large or small amount of salt being added to a preparation.[2] Salt may be used to draw out water, or to magnify a natural flavor of a food making it richer or more delicate, depending on the dish. This type of procedure is akin to curing. For instance, kosher salt (a coarser-grained salt) is rubbed into chicken, lamb, and beef to tenderize the meat and improve flavor. Other seasonings like black pepper and basil transfer some of their flavor to the food. A well designed dish may combine seasonings that complement each other.

Now with that being said -the choice of herbs and seasoning and the timing of when flavors are added will affect the food that is being prepared.  The rule of thumb seems to be if you are using anything fresh whether it is herbs or spices - they should go at the end of the cooking process where dried would go at the beginning and develop a flavor throughout the cooking process.

In some cases, you often see the sauce/flavor added at the very end of the process.  A variety of seasoning techniques exist in various cultures.  For me it is hard to say what my favorite seasoning is… I bounce around a lot

Let’s not go the standard Salt or Pepper route – what do you love to use to add flavor and season to your favorite dishes!  I would love to hear if ketchup is someone’s favorite seasoning.

When I write the word ketchup – I almost can hear zesty-in-laws cringe at the thought.  Do you remember when I whipped up a quick leftover dinner with potatoes and eggs and of course I threw some ketchup on top… well let’s just say I got dragged over the coals for that one.

So really here it is….. Tell me your favorite seasoning or seasonings! I know it will be hard to pick just one but try your best.  I can’t wait to hear them all.

Ok, so here it is! I have been asked numerous times by various people when am I going to post the final result of the house build. Today is the day! I am pretty excited because as I posted throughout the summer with smaller updates it really was a great way to document the whole building process.

Before we get started I owe a lot of credit to the “Zesty Builders“.  We could not have achieved this house without their tremendous ability and support.  I know their female halves are zesty readers as well as other parts of their family so I am sure they will be happy to see the finished product as well.  In addition to the excitement from my part – I think this maybe the longest zesty post ever so bear with me if you are not overly interested in the pictures.

What I thought I would do is break it down into certain rooms and put a little text around certain areas so you can better visualize the space.  Some of the areas are not furnished in the pictures because they are not set up and camera ready.  In addition to that,  as you can see from outside I will do a follow up post in the summer when we have completed the landscaping and deck.  I am pretty excited about the deck that I have drawn in my head so there will be more to come in the summer months.

Exterior

Entry(s)

The front entry is seen below which is located off the cedar deck in the front of the house.

The second picture below is the entrance from the garage.  The double doors you are seeing on the left side of the picture is the walk in pantry and the garage man door is on the right which you cannot see in the picture.  Down to the back left of the half is the 1/2 bathroom and directly across from the bathroom  is a closet.

Kitchen

So here is the kitchen.  I am really excited about the kitchen as you can well imagine.  I love to cook and so far the kitchen is working out really well.  Listed below are some of the features included in the kitchen.

Kitchen Details:

• Maple Cabinets w/ Dark Nut Brown Stain
• Corian Countertops
• Stainless Steel Appliances
• Auto close drawer system
• Soft Close Door System
• Large Walk in Pantry
• TV for the Food Network

Below is the walk in pantry that is directly off the kitchen.  It really is one of my favorite rooms in the house.  it is not super organized as of yet but I am excited to get things in there and organized for both cooking and baking.

Bathroom(s)

In the house we have a total of 2 1/2 bathrooms. Pretty standard – we chose to have a main bathroom upstairs for the kids to share and a master bathroom connected to our room and then a 1/2 bath down stairs.

The Half Bath is seen here. Just a simple all in one cabinet with sink. Nice and contemporary We really like it.

The main bathroom is pictured below which continues the kitchen cabinets with two sinks and a one piece shower/tub.

The Master Bath contains a 4 four stand up shower and a stand alone tub. It also continues the theme of the kitchen cabinets and has his and her sinks.

Staircase

The staircase is custom designed by us and implemented to perfection by the builders.  The stairs are made from birch and stained with a dark nut brown stain to match the kitchen.  The treads are a little wider than normal and feature a simulated 2 inch high tread.  The railing is made from Steel and painted a brownish gray color to match the feature wall in the family room.  The cables are 3/8 inch material pulled taunt for safety.

Family Room

The family room is a large open space with a lot of natural light and features a built out wall with a propane fireplace and a flat screen plasma TV.

Bedrooms

There are four bedrooms upstairs including a spare room, the two kids room and the master bedroom.

Laundry

The Laundry room consists of a front load washer and dryer as well as storage cabinets above and a closet rod at the end of the room to hang wet items that are not allowed to be in the dryer.

Bonus Room

The bonus room situated above the double garage is basically just a “Cave”.  It is where we have the comfy couch, flat screen and DVD player.  It is just a spot to lounge around and either play together or watch tv.  It is very cozy and so far we are very happy with it.  In hindsight we are wishing we put in a larger window but that is not the end of the world.

Project Timeline

• Start Date July 07, 2009
• Completion Date Dec 22, 2009

I didn’t shoot the 3 garages as they are pretty standard and somewhat messy.  For the most part that is Zesty’s house.  I didn’t shoot the basement either as at this point it is unfinished.  We may finish the basement in a year or two.  The next project on the horizon is landscaping, deck building and tree planting.

Overall that is pretty much the whole house.  Of course I am always a fan of reading comments as you know from the past so be sure to leave a comment or ask a question if you so desire.

WOW!  All I can say is that Food Fest to bring in 2010 was simply amazing.  It is 7:00 am as I am typing this with hopes to put together a splashing post for you outlining all the food we ate but I just can’t.  I just got home a few hours ago and I feel like I have been dragged through a knot hole.  Not because I had too much to drink or anything…. just because I think I am too old to stay up that late while having to get up this early.

However, I did want to take the time to wish everyone a Happy New Year and warn you that some killer food is coming up next week.  I would like to extend another thanks for following zesty and making it such a great year.  I have a lot of big plans ahead for 2010 and would love for you to be a part of them.

Happy Christmas Eve! I am just stopping in for a few minutes as you can well imagine I am way behind schedule for Christmas Eve. I am happy to say we moved into the new house last night and it was great! Once we get everything set up – I will be sharing a house tour with you all – we are pretty excited.

With all that said – I need your help. I have to run to work for a bit this morning but after that I need to finish some shopping. Happy Thursday!  Another busy day in store over here and a few hurdles to overcome but nothing we can’t handle.  Moving day is still on schedule for tomorrow and the excitement is starting to set it in for sure.  I was asked yesterday to give my take on “great stocking stuffer” ideas.  Now of course these are just my ideas and they are not all kitchen and food related.

What I would really like to see if you would just add your favorite stocking stuffer idea in the comments section to give other people some more great ideas.  Alright so here goes my list.

1. Unique kitchen gadget like an egg slicer, grapefruit spoon, garlic press, etc.
2. Lottery tickets
3. Chocolate – any kind will do!
4. A book or magazine
5. iTunes Gift Card
6. Travel games
7. Desk or wall calendar
8. Key chain
9. Thermal lunch bag
10. Long distance calling card

And of course you if you really need a fun stocking stuffer you can always buy a “GET ZESTY” T shirt.  I hope you have a great Thursday.  I am off to a Christmas concert this morning and then over to the house to meet the cleaners.  We still have a few things to wrap up including painting the railing and the fireplace hearth.

According to the latest Community Health Survey, on average we consume just over one portion of Milk and Alternatives per day.  That is not even close to the recommended daily intake for each age group:

• Children 2-3 and 4-8 need 2 servings
• Children 9-13 and teens 14-18 need 3-4 servings
• Adults 19-50 need 2 servings
• Adults over 50 need 3 servings

Milk products are our best natural source of calcium and they contain up to 16 essential nutrients that contribute to a healthy body.  I think milk products are even better than most people realize.  A balanced diet that contains enough Milk and Alternatives is associated with healthy bones, healthy blood pressure, and a positive outlook on life.

With all the chatter of milk and alternatives I thought it would be fun to have a little quiz.  I am going to throw down 5 questions below and you let me know in the comments if they are true or false.  I will tell you all the answers tomorrow.  I think this might be a fun way to interact so make sure you tell all your friends and maybe even post it on your blog or mention it on twitter/facebook.

Hey you!  End of the week is here and I wanted to switch up things a little bit and share with you some tips I try to use when planning for a get together or party.  Now these ideas are nothing earth shattering or unheard of but it is just a guideline that may ease some stress around “PARTY TIME“.

1. For a simple centerpiece, arrange bunches of flowers ( daisies, etc in small tin buckets )
2. Plastic glasses and utensils make cleanup easy
3. When serving messy meals like ribs, use lightweight bandannas instead of thin napkins
4. Dress salads just before serving
5. Keep lots of napkins and or paper towel on hand to wipe up spills
6. To keep beverages cold longer, place in a full tub of ice, water and salt ( 1 Tbsp. per Quart of water )
7. Use checklists and try to divide up tasks among your helpers
8. Plan ahead and prep whatever you can ahead of time.
9. Have Fun while doing it

Ok, so it is 8:55 pm o’clock in the evening ( last night ) and I just realized I have a client meeting at 9:00 that I totally forgot about so that is going to eat into my evening of relaxation.  Oh well – I will still try and sneak a piece of fudge and possibly some killer banana bread before hitting the sack.
