Grocery Item of the Week – Smart Ones?

by zesty on October 3, 2008 · 12 comments

So it’s time to go back to the grocery store with Zesty and see what we can find.

Every now and again I eat a microwave dinner… whether I am in a rush or just lazy or there is nothing left in the house around grocery day.  Well this new microwave dinner is a step above the rest.

These new meals from SMARTONES are delicious new recipes inspired by the natural goodness of fruit. Now you can make every bite count with wonderful dishes that combine the intense flavor of real fruit into your everyday meals of juicy meat or poultry and crisp vegetables.

The New Weight Watchers® Smart Ones® Fruit Inspirations™ – the first line of frozen entrées to use real fruit combined with juicy lean proteins and crisp vegetables – satisfy cravings while fitting in to a healthy eating plan. They also provide a convenient way to “sneak” more real fruit into your diet any day or time of the week.

Despite the 3 step process in the microwave - this dish is very satifying, very tasty and well worth the wait.  They have four different flavors to choose from but I just picked this one up to see what it was like.

Looking at the nutritional information it is pretty acceptable for a microwave dinner.  The part that I was most impressed with was the texture.  I find in alot of microwave dinners… the texture is terrible and the chicken is usually sub par at best. I believe this one is worth a reverse engineering attempt to see if I cannot duplicate this in the kitchen from scratch.

This new fruit sensation it was very edible for sure.  I am not promoting Weight Watchers in any sense here  – I just wanted to share with you my experience with my grocery item of the week.  I don’t have any endorsement deal with Weight Watchers… yet. You can check out the other choices on their website.

Give me a shout back and let me know your best or worst microwave dinner experience or even one choice that you see yourself going back to time and time again. I can’t wait to hear… we will have microwave dinner day!!

This one has a lot less sodium than some other frozen meals! It looks pretty good. I don’t eat frozen meals very often, but I do love all the Amy’s Frozen meals!

Yeah the sodium content is decent Megan, I have never had Amy’s frozen dinners…. I wonder if they are in the US only.

I am glad you taste tested it. Honestly I haven’t eaten a frozen dinner in about 10 years. We do on occasion have a frozen pizza and the best one is California Kitchen, we like em all!

I always have a few Smart Ones in the freezer for emergencies. The fruit ones are good, but no matter which one I heat up, I aways add extra steamed veggies for more bulk. My new favorite microwave meal is the Lean Cuisine Panini’s. To. Die. For!

Oh, wow. That looks really good for frozen food! Usually, when we don’t have time to cook, The Angry Chef and I order Chinese.

That said, though, my favorite all-time frozen food has got to be Stouffer’s Mac & Cheese.

I know it’s probably so bad for you, but it’s always SO good when you really, really need a little nibble. I worked as a freelance writer for a number of years, and that was on the top of my list for things to eat when I had to work all night. (Hey, it was, um, fuel. Yeah, that’s it…)

I’ve seen those and have been wondering how they are. I eat a depressing amount of frozen dinners (usually Lean Cuisine) since I have about half an hour between getting off work and having to be in school. I can just pop it in the microwave, and with some fruit or a cup of soup, I figure it’s healthier and more balanced than Burger King!
My favorites are the Lean Cuisine Margherita Pizza and Lean Cuisine’s turkey tenderloins with dressing and whipped sweet potatoes. It’s like Thanksgiving dinner! Very comforting. :)

This looks good and I love the low calories. I hardly ever eat frozen dinners anymore. But when I did my favorite one was the W.W. Santa Fe rice and beans. Really yummy!

I agree on the Amy’s frozen meals. I rarely buy frozen meals, but was having a particularly busy week at work so thought I would try the Amy’s Organic Indian Mattar Paneer. I love “peas and cheese” and almost always order it when I go to an Indian restaurant so I’ve tried a lot of versions and this one held up!

Amy’s is great and I also like Kashi. For SmartOnes, I do have to say vegetable lasagna and santa fe rice and beans are my favorite.

Way to much sodium for me.
