Yes – you heard it right! Remember the cookies you used to eat as a child, I called them spider cookies. You didn’t have to bake them you just whipped them up and devoured them. Well, on the weekend Zesty Jr. and I played a little spin on and created a similar cookie with a slightly different ingredient – OATMEAL.
Now don’t kid yourself or get me wrong here, I didn’t invent this cookie by any stretch however I have never made this cookie before Sunday. Oh and I do have a huge tip to share with you regarding this later on down the post that I hope you follow.
So I guess we should talk cookie here for a second! These literally take longer to eat than they do to make. I am not kidding – you will see when I roll out the instructions. These have great potential as a weight gain product if anyone is looking to go that route. They also can become extremely addictive.
Ingredients
- 2 Cups White sugar
- 1/2 Cup cocoa
- 1/4 Cup butter
- 1/2 Cup milk
- 1 Tsp. Vanilla
- 3 Cups Quick-cooking oatmeal
Method
- Combine sugar, cocoa, butter and milk in a saucepan.
- On medium heat, bring to a boil for one minute.
- Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla and oatmeal.
- Drop by spoonful onto parchment paper.
- Let cool for at least 30 minutes ( I was a bit premature on the timing )
- ENJOY!
Zesty Tip: I strongly suggest using parchment paper on the baking sheet. I opted for wax paper… not sure why but it was not a pretty scene when I went to remove the cookies (perhaps a little to early)
I guess one piece of advice I can give you with this cookie is too chill it before eating but that is just personal preference. The consistency is superb while chilled and they do come off the parchment paper even easier. For storage I just put them in a plastic container for maybe 2 hours until they were gone
I may have dropped too large of dollop for some but really, can you ever have a cookie that is too big? And these are healthy – they have oatmeal in them!
Alright, just because I am all about speed as of late – do you remember when I made the 90 second Macaroon. It was a pretty big success but I think these bad boys today may even top em. Later on in the week, I may have some pretty exciting news to share with you but until then – I will keep it zipped.
Take care
zesty

This is exactly what I was looking for!
I am sure I will try this cookie!

I grew up eating a version of these cookies, but mine had peanut butter and coconut in them as well. They were my absolute favorite, and one of the first things I ever made by myself as a wee lass.
these are my mom’s no bake cookies! A classic in our house. And, ironically, what my husband picked as his “groom’s cake” instead of an actual cake at our wedding
Those look insane- who eats all your delicious food?! I wish I was your neighbor!
the wax on the wax paper probably melted and made it difficult to remove
This was a favorite that was served in the school cafeteria when I was growing up. I’ve only had them with oatmeal and still make them occasionally, though they’re incredibly sweet.
We used to make these in girl scouts. Nom.. (you know, a million years ago)
You put hot stuff on wax paper? ouch -)
LOL. hey stranger
these were a staple in our house a child growing up in Ebenezer… We add coconut….yummy…. im gonna make some tonight for my Grandson Jayden… him and grandpa can enjoy…
That is ONE easy cookie! My thighs are going to blame you!! And wax paper, uncovered, tends to smoke in the oven. That’s why it’s okay to use it to line pans and such, but not for cookies!
Those cookies are soooooo good cold!
This reminds me of Magic Bars – the No Cook Oatmeal/Chocolate crack cookies that you eat a million of
OMG! I made it it is amazing
very very tasty and very easy to make it. I added coconut too!
I adore no-bake cookies and I like that you made these healthier with oatmeal.
These are an old time favorite for me…my great aunt made them for us as a kid and 40 yrs later, I can STILL taste them! delicious!
Yummy! I’ve been known to use aluminum foil to drop these babies on and they peel right off.
Hey Zesty – it’s the zesty in law gone South here ! Looks good – May have made them a couple of times .. Take care say Hi to the rest of the Zesty clan
Droooooooooool! Those cookie look scrumptious!!

Hi zesty, I have to disagree with everyone here. . Made these last night and they were super dry! No way would I be able to “spoon” and put on the parchment paper. They were super dry and crumbly. The result was nasty I threw it out
@ Sara – Any chance that you may have cooked these for more than a minute? Any chance that the measurements of the ingredients were mistaken? Did you use the Quick cooking Oats? The only reason I ask is that mine were definitely wet.
I used the same exact ingredients you had in the picture.. and a minute.. i was watching the clock, promise. the only difference maybe in the cocoa, i used dark instead of milk chocolate because i prefer dark chocolate..
the consistency has to do with how long you cook them. it has to be basically EXACTLY one minute; too long, and they’ll be dry; not long enough, they’ll be wet….
Try making them using the microwave…same ingred ‘cept 1\2 cup butter. Microwave the sugar, milk, butter for 2 to 4 mins on high, one min at a time, mixing at each min, til melted and mixed. Add cocoa and vanilla, mix…add coconut and oats, mix. Drop and cool, licking the bowl while you wait…
This reminds me of same cookies that our mom used to make for us for many years. Peanut butter was sometimes added instead of butter. This is the first recipe I ever cooked by myself. Only forgot about it when we were all grown ups. So glad to find this blog and this recipe.
I’m loving this blog, the contents, the photos and all. Just bookmarked it and I will certainly visit here often.
these cookies are awesome….we put 1 cup of peanut butter (not natural, we tried that once and it messed them up) in ours with the oats and vanilla…SO good!!
My mom always made these when I was a kid but always with oatmeal. So I’m now very curious what you used to make them with. Everyone I knew also called them Spider Cookies but in our family we called them Fiddle Diddles. Not sure where the name came from but I think it’s kind of fun
The cookies look awesome they look very very tasty.
