My mom always made these when I was a kid but always with oatmeal. So I'm now very curious what you used to make them with. Everyone I knew also called them Spider Cookies but in our family we called them Fiddle Diddles. Not sure where the name came from but I think it's kind of fun :)

the consistency has to do with how long you cook them. it has to be basically EXACTLY one minute; too long, and they'll be dry; not long enough, they'll be wet....

This reminds me of same cookies that our mom used to make for us for many years. Peanut butter was sometimes added instead of butter. This is the first recipe I ever cooked by myself. Only forgot about it when we were all grown ups. So glad to find this blog and this recipe.

I'm loving this blog, the contents, the photos and all. Just bookmarked it and I will certainly visit here often.

Try making them using the microwave...same ingred 'cept 1\2 cup butter. Microwave the sugar, milk, butter for 2 to 4 mins on high, one min at a time, mixing at each min, til melted and mixed. Add cocoa and vanilla, mix...add coconut and oats, mix. Drop and cool, licking the bowl while you wait...

@ Sara - Any chance that you may have cooked these for more than a minute? Any chance that the measurements of the ingredients were mistaken? Did you use the Quick cooking Oats? The only reason I ask is that mine were definitely wet.

Hi zesty, I have to disagree with everyone here. . Made these last night and they were super dry! No way would I be able to "spoon" and put on the parchment paper. They were super dry and crumbly. The result was nasty I threw it out
