Who's up for a Sweet Marie Bar?

by zesty on October 6, 2008 · 22 comments

So, lets start off the week with my rendition of my mom’s classic sweet marie bar recipe.  So simple to make yet so yummy to eat.  This recipe is basically a kicked up rice krispy square with some peanuts and peanut butter. How can you go wrong?

This recipe is so simple that it’s almost funny to write it down… but everybody needs to try them.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 Cup Peanut Butter
  • 1 Cup Corn Syrup
  • 1 Cup Peanuts
  • 3 Cups Rice Krispies
  • 1 Package Semi Sweet Chocolate Chips
  • 1/2 Bar Parowax

Method

  1. Melt the first three ingredients on the stove
  2. Add the Peanuts and Rice Krispies once melted
  3. Spread into pan and let cool
  4. Cut into Squares
  5. Melt Chocolate Chips and Parowax into a double boiler
  6. Once it reaches the smooth consistency – remove from heat
  7. Dip Squares into Chocolate
  8. Place on Wax Paper to cool

These chocolate treats freeze very well and I often find myself eating these right from the freezer year round.

Tips/Alternatives

To switch things up for a slightly different flavor – you could use dark chocolate.  If that is your fancy or you may want to add other ingredients to the squares such as seeds, to make it more of a trail mix bar.  The opportunities are endless.  Play with it and ENJOY!

OMG those look amazing! If I wasn’t diabetic, I’d make a batch of those every week!

(Maybe I’ll make them for my kids though!)

Thanks Zesty!

Hey, thanks for the visit!

Those look great. If my little one saw these, he’d never let me make regular rice krispie treats again! Yum!

Is it my imagination, or did my butt get bigger just reading this? I’ve never heard of Sweet Marie, but she’s obviously evil! EVIL. Must. Have.

Chocolate, peanut butter, and rice krispies? Yeah, you really can’t go wrong. But uh, what’s parowax?

Biz – I think you should make them for your kids for sure :)

Recipegirl – thanks so much

Thanks Dee..

Marianne – The addition of paraffin (AKA Parowax) to the chocolate candy gives it a nice, glossy finish and helps it remain solid at room temperature. It is often referred to as Baker’s wax and is perfectly edible.

These are amazing! I love them. I think if you didn’t have the parowax you could use a couple of tablepoons of shortening instead, it does the same thing to chocolate-makes it hard and shiny. What do you think, Zesty?

Reeni, You are absolutely correct. You could so do that. That is basically all the parowax is doing… Good point!

Could you just leave out the wax all together? I have no need for shiny chocolate.
