Zesty's Top 10 Cereal Toppings

by zesty on August 27, 2009 · 32 comments

Yes I know… cereal toppings (not that exciting but in actual fact you see them everywhere). People love putting things on top of their cereal whether it’s hot or cold.  I want to share some of my favorites and create a list in the comments section. Lets see if we can get to 100 different toppings and then create a super cereal.

For me, I have a wide variety of add ins for both hot and cold cereals.

I am a huge fan of fresh berries (of any kind, I am in love with nuts and raisins).  I also like to add seeds if I have them kicking around.  What I have been using often recently is dried fruit which is pretty fun as well.  Now for hot cereal I do love both brown sugar and peanut butter. Please note that I do not include MILK as one of my toppings.

Zesty’s Top 10 Cereal Toppings

  1. Strawberries
  2. Blueberries
  3. Almonds
  4. Bananas
  5. Peanut Butter
  6. Brown Sugar
  7. Raisins
  8. Raspberries
  9. Flax Seed
  10. Butterscotch Chips

So there you have it!  I am excited to hear your favorite cereal toppings whether they are for hot or cold – I want to hear them all!  I hope you have a great day.  The weather in the DC area is fabulous.  I am having a lot of meetings but I can’t complain.

Things are going well and I hear the house is moving along as I was speaking with the builder today.  Prepping for the roof  – so be prepared for yet another house update in the near future.

Have a great Thursday.

Take care

zesty

On yogurt I like either some of my super easy way fantastic homemade granola or some grapenuts… On cold cereal I am all for berries (except blueberries). Adn on hot cereal. Brown sugar, maple syrup, and cream.

Now- just a quick suggestion for you… Nothing quite so tasty on waffles or pancakes as peanut butter and maple syrup (together). Must try it. It’s SO GOOD!

Oh I LOVE this topic!! I love cold cereal (but I also like oatmeal on occasion) with frozen blackberries as my topping. I like it when the milk stays cold as the blackberries cool down, it’s so refreshing and tasty!

Granola! I love to put granola on top of whatever cereal I’m eating…it adds the perfect amount of crunch and sweetness.

Yuck I would not include milk as a topping either! Yogurt is so much better with cereal!!

I’m a big fan of Nuts, Shredded Coconut, Berries, Apple Sauce, Granola, Almond Butter and so many other varieties of things depending on the season. :)

Not that exciting? I was super excited to see a cereal post, as I love my hot cereal. I’m boring with my choices for both hot and cold, but favorites are almond butter, cinnamon, bananas, fresh blueberries and strawberries, butter and odd as it may sound–raw corn on hot oatmeal. There’s a sweet, crunchy factor going on with that one.

Other cereal! No really, I almost never eat just one type of cereal at once. If I eat something on the plain side (bran or wheat whatevers), I usually try to put a little bit of something fun on top, like honey nut cheerios or something sweet.

As far as “regular” toppings go, I almost always use either 1/2 a banana, blueberries, strawberries, raisins, or a small handful of whatever baking “chips” I have on hand (chocolate, butterscotch, peanut butter, toffee).

Probably my favorite cereal topping though… Graham Crackers! If you don’t like them soggy, you have to eat it FAST though.

My number one has to be wheat germ! I am all about crunch (although the nutrition boost doesn’t hurt either). Almond butter is another winner.

On cold cereal, blueberries and/or bananas. On oatmeal, raisins, brown sugar, maple syrup, ground flax seeds, dollop of Greek yogurt (but not necessarily all at once!). Or this a.m. I added a big tablespoonful of Peanut Butter & Co. Dark Chocolate Dreams to my oatmeal, stirred it up, and then topped the whole shebang with some original Fiber One. It was really sweet, but very very good!

This will sound odd, but I like to dice watermelon up real small and add that to cold cereal (with milk), being sure to get all the liquid in the millk for optimum flavor and crunch! top it off with honey = ) I will put almost any fruit into my cereal

For hot cereal I like any fresh or dried fruit I can find, brown sugar or molasses, and some kind of seasoning. Sometimes its cardamom and rosewater, other times its cinnamon and vanilla, etc. I also add a bit of milk or cream most times

Coconut is a favourite of mine, for sure. As well as most fruits, nut butters, and nuts themselves :D
