Zesty’s Top Ten Toast Toppings

by zesty on March 19, 2012 · 78 comments

Happy Monday everybody!  I am out of the office today but still wanted to post something special and fun. I posted this 3 1/2 years ago and received a very good response as to what people liked on their toast. So I thought, readers have changed, tastes have changed – let’s ask again? What does everybody like on their toast?

Quite a title for this post… isn’t it?  Well I am hoping to have an interactive post about toppings for your toast.  Now of course there is plain butter but I thought I would share with you some of my all-time favorite toppings for toast.  In return, I would love for each and every reader to post their favorite topping in the comments section.  I think this will be fun!

Let’s keep in mind that the options are endless and it’s very difficult to narrow it down to just ten.  It just so happens that I have a couple of different loaves of bread on hand so here are some of my favorites and a couple pictures.

Top Ten Toast Toppings

  1. Apple Sauce (homemade), Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Dash of Brown Sugar – A simple dessert like toast that can be enjoyed anytime of the day.
  2. Peanut Butter, Nutella (or any chocolate spread) and Banana – This stick to your ribs favorite will get you going in the morning.
  3. Butter, Strawberry Jam, Sharp Cheddar Cheese - Possibly one of my all time favorite…. i love the combination of cheese and homemade jam from Mom.
  4. Bacon, Tomato, Cheddar Cheese - A quick BLT without the lettuce… you can add lettuce if you want but I prefer without.
  5. Almond Butter, Honey and Granola - The sweet goodness really fills you up in the morning. great combination of flavors here.
  6. Butter, Garlic, Parmesan and Mozzarella Cheese - The old fashion garlic bread… can you really beat it. Serve this up with a big dish of Spaghetti
  7. Tuna Salad, Celery, Havarti Cheese - A simple lunch that really fits the bill and is so delicious on a thick slice of multigrain bread in the toaster oven.
  8. Butter and Poached Egg - The breakfast classic and oh so good with a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice or even a berry smoothie
  9. Brie, Cranberry Sauce and Bacon – Killer snack and even great for parties on mini toasts.
  10. Chicken Salad, Walnuts and Diced Granny Smith Apple - One of my favorite open faced sandwiches.

Zesty Tip: When cooking toast, always try and add the topping as soon as the toast is popped and at it’s hottest point.  Also if you are adding a fairly heavy topping, I like to brown the toast a little darker than normal to avoid the bread getting soggy.

So there you have it, my top ten toast toppings!  I am sure that there are hundreds of combinations out there, so let’s hear them.  This is a great opportunity for you to share your crazy toast toppings.  You just may realize that it is not that crazy after all.  Have a great Tuesday everybody.  Keep Smiling.

For me the best topping is both cream cheese and fruit jam, yes, both of them together makes a very special flavor!

GREAT toppings list!! My favorite topping = GLOBS of nut-butter or seed-butter, of course :-D

LOVE this post. I always forget to get creative with my toast. It’s such a versatile food. Your combos sound delicious. Love the sounds of combining jam and cheese. And that eggy pic looks perfect!

Wow! I want to make every one of these! What a list!
That egg looks delicious – but I would probably pick the bacon, tomato and cheddar as my favourite from your list.

Here, we love anything on any variety of toast, but one of my favourites is still toasted baguette slices with cream cheese and red pepper jelly. Yum!

Thanks for sharing!

I always like cinnamon sugar and a little butter. I also love cream cheese with a little pumpkin butter on top!

Oh these all sound great! :D I’m rather usually rather old-fashioned when it comes to toast. I love loads of butter and blueberry jam.

I love my toast topped with a tiny bit of butter and an over-easy fried egg (and of course, a bit of salt and pepper).

(I’m also a big fan of butter and homemade peach or strawberry jam)

Rub the hot toast with a clove of garlic (the garlic melts right into the toast and becomes almost like a garlic paste), drizzle with olive oil and finish with a hit of a good flaky salt… SO GOOD!!

Wonderful post, Zesty! I think I like #3 the best: butter + jam + sharp cheddar. That combination combines four of my favorite foods into one bite (impressive!).

Since we’re getting elaborate here, my favorite dinner toast is rye bread topped with Moosewood’s Artichoke Sauce and scrambled eggs. Eat it with a big salad or a cup of vegetable soup and dinner is complete.

My mom used to make the BEST raspberry jam, back when they had a bunch of raspberries bushes. That was the greatest thing on toast. Other than that, I like a sunny side up egg and some butter the best. Mmm… crap. I have to go make one right now!

Mmmm I love toast, and I LOVE this post! I guess my favorite toppings would be ANYTHING having to do with nut butter, pb, jelly and banana is definitely at the top of my list!

Cheddar Cheese and Apple slices!!

but i completely agree with Peanut Butter and Banana (i’ll have to make the Nutella addition next time) and of course poached egg on toast is the best lunch!

my housemates and i eat so much toast. one of them eats it mostly with butter and jam or eggs, but three of us do mostly peanut butter. in fact, we ate a 9-lb tub of peanut butter in 3 weeks. that’s dedication.
a really delicious, yet strange-sounding combo is peanut butter, a little tahini, a little hot sauce, raisins, and some sort of leafy green. the sweet, salty, and savory complement eachother very well.
when i want some variety, i do plain yogurt and some sort of jam or fruit butter. i just discovered it, and it’s so good!

What about Vegemite! Toast is just not complete without dark salty Vegemite on hot buttery white toast. Nothing like it ( and yes, I mean in a positive way! :) )

Oh goodness! A poached egg upon toast is in my short (10 item) list of favourite foods of all time. So, sadly, I think you beat me to the punch on this one. =(

Reply

32 Coby November 12, 2008 at 1:09 am

Vegemite! Spread evenly but sparingly please.

Otherwise I agree on the poached egg, or fried egg, or scrambled, just love eggs with toast.

Avocado on barely toasted bread is delicious.

Tomatoes – I am a savoury girl as you can see, no sweet toppings thanks.

as odd as it sounds… a little bit of ketchup is pretty great on toast. its not something i have often, and i admit i was quite skeptical the first time i tried it, but it really it pretty good!

my all time favorite still stands at butter+egg+american cheese. it reminds me of my grandma. :)

What a post! Most of us love our toasts with cream cheese and jam as I see :D I’m not so far from that. Just jam changes. I prefer sour-cherry jam, or bergamot jam on cream cheese. Rather tangy/citrus jams.
Btw last week I watched Anthony Worrall Thompson preparing a sandwich, and I guess the ingredients would go well with a toast too.
Chopped chives stirred in ricotta base, a thin slice of smoked salmon garnished with fried capers. Mmmmmmm (there were roasted bacons and a spoon of apricot jam in the sandwich but I’d rather discard these with toast :p)

Baked beans and cheese!
Brie, honey and walnuts (I first tried this on holiday in Italy, it is so amazing)
Peanut butter and honey
Bacon and egg
Good old plain butter
A mixture of blue cheese, cream cheese with garlic and herbs and red leicester cheese – on toast, popped under the grill. Delicious!

Oh toast, how I love thee.

wow, I’m glad I haven’t had breakfast yet, I get to try something out! MY personal favs are as follows
* low fat cream cheese with thin slices of tomato and a touch of pepper
* butter, garlic, super sharp cheddar cheese
* any nut butter with either fruit sliced thin (think apples) or jam
* peanut butter and maple syrup
* peanut butter mixed with a small amount of icing (usually vanilla left over from baking projects)
* super sharp cheddar with tuna salad
ok…now I am heading to the kitchen for breakfast, thanks to everyone for the amazing ideas…can’t wait to try them out

You’ve forgotten cottage cheese and orange marmalade! It’s absolutely delicious, with the creamy cottage cheese balancing out the tart-sweet marmalade, and, somehow, it’s also almost *juicy*. Hard to explain, but you’ll just have to try it..

Other than PB & sliced bananas, the best toast or bagel topping is olive cream cheese: cream cheese whipped with sliced or chopped green olives from the jar and I don’t even like olives.

I’d say I love butter, peanut butter and any fruit jam combination on toast.
There’s also the butter and kaya (a Malaysian-style coconut jam) combination.
And the half-boiled egg and butter…
And most of your lists are potential winners too!

My all-time favorite standby is butter and honey on crusty white bread. A basic favorite of mine is toasted extra-sour sourdough with globs of salty butter! And finally, pumpernickel topped with slices of pear, with a slice of brie melted over the top is just heavenly! Oh, and a shout out as well to french bread slathered with homemade bitter-orange marmalade.

Ooh… I lurve toast with:

- plain butter (no fakey margarine stuff, just lovely yellowy Kerrygold butter)
- butter and vegemite, especially if there may be a hangover involved
- sharp cheddar with homemade courgette and onion pickle for lunch

and for dessert:

- crunchy peanut butter and honey
- butter and gobs of homemade rhubarb jam

Yum!

Ok, I just found this, thanks to Tastespotting.com. Nice idea!

My favorite, although usually only on special occasions, very thinly sliced apples, a dash of nutmeg, and maybe a little sugar or honey, depending on the apple. Topped with grated Jarlsberg Cheese and put back under the broiler until cheese melts. Open face.

Sandwich: Toasted bread, bacon, honey, peanut butter
